What we do
The short answer: we help people just like you to live life to the fullest potential. The long answer: we specialize in athletic performance, postural issues, injury recovery, injury prevention and flexibility enrichment. Whether you're an athlete, a busy mom, a business professional, or simply pursuing an active lifestyle we offer a variety of techniques to meet you right where you are. Here's a glimpse into what we can do to help:
Tissue preparation before, during, and after activity/competition that lengthens myofascial tissue and muscle length, increases circulation and increases metabolic recovery.
Myofascial integration technique (MIT)
Deep tissue work designed to restructure your muscles and soft tissue by creating space in the body. This allows for freedom in your range of motion and promotes the relief of many chronic painful conditions. As an active participant, you will be educated on the importance of strengthening exercises, flexibility, and movement intended to support a higher-level performance.
Myofascial integration structural technique (MIST)
MIST is simply advanced MIT work which results in a 10-session protocol that's both therapeutic and educational, allowing you to fully understand your body and actively improve your body's function. Ultimately these sessions improve breathing capacity, posture, movement, flexibility, body awareness and promote overall wellness.
active isolated stretching (ais)
An active-assisted stretch technique that increases tissue-joint movement and improves physiological function. AIS is great for increasing range of motion in joints, creating more fluid movement and unbinding tight muscles.
So, what is Fascia?
You might be wondering what all this "fascia" talk is about. Fascia or myofascia is a highly dense and incredibly strong layer of tissue surrounding all your muscles and bones. Activating one's fascia through stretching, manipulation and massage has proven to not only release tension but also improve strength and flexibility.
Your First visit
Where to go
We're located at 211 Sherway Road, Suite B, Knoxville, TN 37922 next door to Revolution Dance Studio. There's plenty of parking available in front of our building.
what to expect
A first visit anywhere can be a little uncomfortable so it's our goal to make you as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
For your first, please visit bring a pair of athletic shorts. If you don't happen to have a pair then don't worry, we will provide you with some! We ask that ladies wear a sports top or sports bra as well.
A typical MIT or sports massage session can be scheduled for 30 minutes or 60 minutes in a semi-private therapy room with one of our professional staff. If you get hot or cold, experience any unusual pain, or simply need anything at all then don't hesitate to let us know!
what happens next
After your first session you'll most likely feel a couple of things: increased mobility, less tension, and decreased pain. Hydration and mobilization will help minimize any post-treatment soreness. Some soreness is to be expected as we've stretched and moved some muscles that have likely been either overworked or underworked for extended periods of time.
After your first appointment we will be able to give you a treatment protocol and schedule any recommended follow up appointments.
Bryan Carter, LMT, NCTMB
As a former Olympic Taekwondo competitor, trainer, coach and school owner, I found myself wanting to help my competitors, as well as their families, find relief from years of pain and injuries. I had also struggled with injuries and overall soreness from years of playing sports and competitions. In 2003, I started massage therapy school at the Center of Rehabilitative Education (CORE) where the focus was myofascial integration and structural body work.
For the past 14 years, I’ve been blessed to be able to help others get back to an active lifestyle or start the active life they want. I’ve worked with clients of all ages, from a 3-month-old newborn to an 83-year-old ballroom dancer. I’ve also worked with middle school and high school students, professional athletes and Olympians. Now I have my own team of qualified and licensed massage therapists to help me ensure all of our clients have an active, happy and pain-free life.

Growing up as a competitive golfer, I struggled with the pain of scoliosis for years. I saw doctors and physical therapists, but the pain still persisted. In 2012, a friend suggested I see Bryan Carter at Carter Sport Therapy. After a few treatments, I noticed the pain was much less severe and my quality of life was changing for the better. This experience would end up being a turning point in my life, physically and professionally.
Living in pain is a horrible feeling, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. But I knew this was something I could do to help others. I started massage therapy school in 2012 and have been a client- turned-therapist for the past four years. I am blessed to be able to help hundreds of people live a more active and pain-free lifestyle.

I first came to Carter Sport Therapy three years ago after suffering from chronic shoulder and neck pain with little relief. I didn’t know what to expect when I walked in the door and the experience has changed my life in more ways than one. First, I gained relief from my constant pain, but I also found a career after Bryan suggested that I become a licensed massage therapist. I earned my certification and joined the Carter Sport Therapy team in August 2016.
I enjoy working with clients of all ages and I’m very interested in helping caregivers for those who have special challenges and illnesses. Since I have a child with special needs, I realize how important it is for caregivers to take care of themselves first so they can help others. I feel blessed to have a job where I can help people live healthy, pain-free lives and I can learn and grow as a therapist.
